Melbourne Museum

Today I went to the Melbourne Museum. This is some info which I took from the Museum website.

The modernist Melbourne Museum is the largest museum complex in the Southern Hemisphere. Spread over three levels, the museum draws on the latest technology to give an insight into Australia's flora, fauna and culture.

Highlights include the Science and Life Gallery, which explores areas such as digital technology, biodiversity and geology, and how they have changed the perceptions of the natural world and Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre at Melbourne Museum, a living cultural centre for the Koori community of south-eastern Australia.

Also of interest is Australia's iconic racehorse Phar Lap and the Children's Gallery, where the brightly coloured cube-shaped Big Box provides a fun and stimulating environment for children from three to eight years old.

One of the museum's most striking exhibits is the Forest Gallery, a living interpretation of Victoria's tall temperate forests which features around 8000 plants from more than 120 different species. It's also home to more than 20 different vertebrate species, including snakes, birds, fish, frogs and hundreds of different insects.

Adjoining the museum is IMAX Theatre, which boasts the world's largest movie screen – eight levels high and featuring state-of-the-art visual technology, along with surround sound. A variety of 2D and 3D films are projected here each day.

4th day: Guildford

Date: 11th June 2008

Today walked to Surrey Uni, joined hubby for lunch at the park, enjoy the view then walk to the town. Supposed to join a group walk around Guildford but missed the group as Man came out late for lunch. I also missed the row boat along the river as the place closed early. End up me shopping around the town again. Bought dinner from Mark and Spenser market and we had dinner in the room.

A Walk to Remember

Tunsgate square, another shopping mall selling beutiful furnitures and lots more

This is the castle: William the Conqueror built castles in all the important towns to prevent rebellion and to strengthen his hold on the country. Guildford would have been chosen because it was the only town in Surrey (apart from Southwark) and later became the county town. It was also on an important route between London and the south coast and the west of England. The first structures at the castle would have been the motte, or mound, surrounded by a ditch, and an adjoining bailey, defended by a wooden palisade. The bailey boundary ran along Castle Street, South Hill, the edge of what is now Racks Close and along a line parallel with Quarry Street but to the east.

The museum: Founded in 1898 and now houses the largest collection of archaeology, local history and needlework in Surrey. There are facilities for children and a shop stocking a range of local history books and gifts.

The Guildhall: Is a 16th and 17th century building of great historic interest. It used to be a courtroom and council chamber. The ground floor is of Tudor origin. The building houses civic plate, including many rare items. The Classical front of the building is dominated by a magnificent bracket clock made in 1683.
